Balance of Spiritual and Material: The Key to True Prosperity
One of the most common misconceptions is the belief that spiritual development and material well-being are incompatible. Many people believe that gaining financial freedom requires sacrificing spiritual values, ideals and principles. However, in fact, the truth is quite the opposite: it is the harmonious combination of spiritual growth and material realisation that is the key to true prosperity in all spheres of life.
This truth is based on the principle of energy exchange and the law of karma – the universal law of cause and effect that operates on all levels of existence. We receive favourable opportunities, fortunate events and material benefits from the Universe as a reward for our good, creative thoughts, words and deeds aimed at the development and prosperity of ourselves and the living beings around us. Accordingly, destructive, destructive actions that contradict the higher spiritual laws lead to the accumulation of negative karmic energy and to difficult, problematic life circumstances.
Money and material resources are one of the forms of such retribution, received from the Universe in exchange for our positive contribution, which we make, realising the programme of spiritual purpose and higher mission inherent in us. However, many people mistakenly believe that it is possible to earn big money only through deception, manipulation on human vices, self-serving exploitation and dishonest treatment of others. Such an approach may bring short-term financial benefits, but in the long term it inevitably leads to an increasing karmic deficit and gradual depletion of both material and spiritual benefits, plunging a person into a downward spiral of degradation, apathy and poverty.
For example, an acquaintance of mine decided to open a chain of grocery shops, hoping for a quick buck. But her business was built solely on the selfish pursuit of profit at any cost. It brutally exploited its employees, forcing them to work for a pittance in appalling conditions, selling substandard expired products, unscrupulously cheating its customers. As a result, her businesses went bankrupt, she found herself in huge debts and lost both her self-respect and the respect of others.
The true secret of financial prosperity and spiritual enrichment lies in a balanced combination of material and spiritual. We acquire true material wealth when we direct our efforts not only to our own enrichment and achievement of selfish goals, but also to help in the development, spiritual growth and self-realisation of other people and all living things around us. In this way we build harmonious relationships with the Higher Spiritual Forces that control the processes of energy exchange and distribution of benefits in the Universe. We strengthen our karma and attract new favourable opportunities for prosperity in both the material and spiritual spheres.
A key aspect of spiritual growth and progress is the constant reprogramming of destructive patterns of thinking and behaviour into more constructive, consciousness-expanding patterns. It is important to develop mindfulness – the ability to keep your attention in the ‘here and now’ moment without being distracted by illusory experiences of the past or fantasies about the future. Awareness allows you to recognise and follow the true impulses and signs of the Higher Powers, rather than obeying the limiting subconscious attitudes often imposed by society in the process of upbringing and education.
For example, one of my acquaintances became interested in yoga and decided to become an enlightened spiritual teacher. However, he soon began to criticise and despise any spiritual teachings other than his own school of yoga. He also completely denied the importance of material goods and refused any paid work, expecting that everything he needed would be sent down to him by Providence. Eventually poverty and hunger forced him to give up his spiritual practices and return to ordinary life.
Meditative practices, deep study of the Tarot, constant self-observation and work on oneself greatly facilitate the process of separating false aspirations from the true ones coming from the higher part of the soul. Understanding the laws of karma and energy exchange with the world around us, we learn to build harmonious relationships with society so that the spiritual and material value we create can be freely monetised, increasing our level of well-being.
At the same time, it is extremely important to remember that the acquired wealth should not become a source of neurotic desire for unrestrained accumulation and mindless consumerism. Such an attitude is a form of crude materialism devoid of spiritual meaning. The true spiritual path lies in gaining inner freedom and independence from material values and illusory benefits of the transitory physical world. Following his higher spiritual mission and destiny, man fills his life with beauty, harmony and creative work, without giving up external manifestations of material prosperity and comfort. He looks upon them not as ends in themselves, but as natural by-products of his spiritual fulfilment.
Many famous entrepreneurs, having achieved financial success, are fully realised also in the spiritual sphere, creating charitable foundations. Their material assets are constantly growing, but at the same time, they get more and more opportunities to help those in need and contribute to the spiritual development of humanity.
Ultimately, the main obstacle to financial prosperity and success is the artificial separation of the spiritual and material in the mind of man himself. Having realised their harmonious unity, we open in our lives a full-flowing stream of abundance, allowing us to realise to the maximum the divine potential inherent in us both in the material and spiritual spheres. And this is the true fulfilment of the Creator’s plan for man’s destiny.
